The Pace Report: “The Bone Of Success” The Natalie Cressman Interview

Female trombonists are a rarity in music, especially jazz music. Over the century jazz trombone has also been one of obscurity as well. A handful of trombonists like Jack Teagarden, J.J. Johnson, Slide Hampton, and the great Bob Brookmeyer broke ground with this instrument and continue to be revered in jazz.

Natalie Cressman is changing that. She’s been on the music scene for well over a decade backing and touring with the likes of Trey Anastacio, Nicholas Payton, and Carlos Santana. Her latest CD “Turn The Sea” is her second release and she tackles jazz, folk, rock, and soul for this outing. Natalie hails her music as “Indie-Jazz” and her live shows incorporate a hybrid of the music that represents her generation.

The San Francisco native is the daughter of jazz vocalist Sandy Cressman and trombonist and recording engineer Jeff Cressman who also mixed Natalie’s CD’s.
